The Challenge of World Missions II – A Holistic Approach

Dale Rhoton,  04/07/2010
Dale Rhoton is the co-founder of Operation Mobilization together with George Verver.
The text is Matthew 10:7-8
Mat 10:7-8  And proclaim as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'  (8)  Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.

(I caught up with Pastor Matthew Foo after the service and got what he shared about F.A.I.T.H.F.U.L.)
As shared by Pastor Matthew, faithful = faithfulness always increases the heart for undying (or was it unending) loyalty.

In 1971, Dale and wife went on board OM Logos. The ship director had three prayer requests, they didn’t have a
captain, a doctor or money to pay bills. God in his mercy
granted them what they needed.
In 1978, Dale went to OM Doulos and the same ship director took over from the previous ship. Again he had the three requests.
In 40 years, there were only 2 times the ship were delayed. They had good Bible sales in the places they visit.
Recap of yesterday’s message:
The three greatest events that took place on planet earth. The answer is found in Luke 24:46,47.
Luk 24:46-47  and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,  (47)  and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Jesus said the Christ must suffer. Jesus wanted the disciples to keep the main thing the main thing. That’s the main thing. God loves us to much he suffered and died. That’s the first event. But we don’t serve a dead saviour. He rose again. He has power to lay his life down and take it back. That’s the 2nd greatest event. The 3rd event is the sharing of the Gospel all over the earth. The crucifixion, the resurrection and the missions are the three greatest events in human history.
Brazilians could be mourning but there are tens of millions of them in church celebrating God. Argentines could be humiliated in the defeat in World Cup but millions are celebrating in church and sharing the Gospel.
A holistic ministry means we preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and at the same time minister to the people’s physical needs.
Preach the Gospel and use word if necessary. There is some truth to this but there is also a danger. Christianity is very verbal. Jesus is the Great Physician. He has a heart for the healing of the sick.
2.6 billion people live in RM7 or less (I didn’t get the frequency, whether it’s daily or monthly).
When we get in to the social Gospel, that deals with the physical needs, there is a danger. When we come to Christ, we were not promised an easy life. There are things we as Christians must come to terms with and make a decision to move on.
A man that had a great impact on OM is Dr. Francis Schaeffer. He said there is a danger of nature eating up grace.
A leader who worked in Bangladesh shared that each year USD 1 million went through his hands to help relief the natural disasters. But he had to cut back on his Bible ministry.
Bill and Melinda Gates went to Africa and decided what they saw was not acceptable. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation believes that every life has equal value.
Technology is driven by market forces. There was no commercial demands on the treatment of malaria, yellow fever, and tuberculosis. There are no such diseases in developed nations. About USD 1 bullions were spent every year on baldness. A Wall Street Journal article in 2009 claimed we have the capacity to cure malaria then.
Jesus asked us to go and preach. People need to hear the good news. But Jesus also told us to attend to the total needs.
We love simple answers. But there are many issues that don’t have simple answers.

Dambiso Moyo us regarded as one of the 100 most influential persons in the world.  She estimated USD 1 trillion has been given to Africa but it was causing more harm than good. It supported corrupted regime.
We talk about not using pesticides but if we don’t use it, 25,000 more died of starvation.
No single ministry is going to be balanced in everyway. How do we respond? One way we do not dare to respond is to give up.
Rom 1:17  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith."
How can we make the greatest impact for Jesus? Take steps of faith. Think about what will help people in the long term. Jesus said we will be rewarded if we give one cup of water. A cup of water doesn’t last longer than a few hours. Even in this small thing we are rewarded.
The very important thing is to keep the Cross.
Here is a fun and significant to do. Read the book of Acts and find out the number of times the cross, the resurrection (rise up) and the Gospel (or proclamation) are mentioned. We will find the cross, the resurrection and the Gospel together in many places. The book of Acts were written 30 years after the crucifixions.
God has a unique plan for each of us. He wants to do a unique thing for each of us.
