Old Year Musings

It's the last day of the year. In less than 15 hours (I started this around 0915), people will be counting down everywhere to usher in a new year. I originally worked on a sermon on looking back the old year last Sunday. I didn't get to use it. It's ok.

Let me list things that were the year 2008 for me, in no particular order.

TV shows I like: Pushing Daisies.

This has got to be the best blend of death and comedy in a long while.

TV shows I like:  Burn Notice.

Best TV show in the year for me. It’s so funny.

Longtime desire achieved:

I finally got Christmas Shoes DVD in the video shop near the church. I always wanted to get this. I remember one Sunday afternoon when I watched this at home alone. I cried and cried and cried. I must share this with my family and friends.

Things I don’t like: Becoming a McD addict.

In the beginning, it was amusing when colleagues teased me for getting “McDonald’s again?” Then I dug up information on Supersize Me and decided if I wanted to be healthy, I should cut down on unhealthy food. Translating some MOH (Ministry of Health) materials exposed me to certain undesirable gejala-gejala. I could do without them. For the sake of my loved ones and myself, I want to stay healthy.

Things started in (the last few days of) 2008:

Low carb diet. Exercise. Don’t take too much food.

Things still happening in 2008: Misuse of credit card.

It seems like not a year went by without us fixing this. The fact that the former company didn’t pay salary for 2 months (they paid me back one month with one month notice after I left) didn’t help. The Biblical Studies on Financial Freedom helped.

Things stopped happening in 2008:

Preaching in Chinese service. Uncles, aunties, I cannot answer you why I don’t preach to you anymore. I don’t make the schedule.

Survived in 2008: BMCS (the Bahasa Malaysia Celebration Service)

Not that there was any doubt it would not. And it achieved its goal of 20 members. Now, if it could get on its feet and start walking …

Things done first time in 2008: 3-month prayer journey

That was good in so many levels. The family (and other families) prayed together. Brothers and sisters got a chance to pray for one another. We focus on the same prayer pointers and were set free in many ways. Kudos to Pastor Reynold. God bless him.

Things done first time in 2008: Project Timothy

This is good stuff. We had two semesters of learning together. Caleb is not a Jew. Boaz and Ruth did not have sex on the threshing floor that night. Imprecatory / cursing psalms are good for you. Watch out for parallelism in Psalms. Look for verses which repeat or reinforce the same thing, or contrast each other. Spot the pattern in the Psalmists’ writings. Someone told me someone told him if your faith is not strong, it will crack when you join PT. Now, where did that come from?

What a rush. We missed some key area in our testing. It’s ok. We will be more careful next time.

Things that have not happened for a long time: Bonus and Increment.

Those are good stuff. This company is here to stay. So is this employee.

There could be more  after this ...

“Building an Authentic Family”

When Others Cared for You (1 Thess 2 & 3)

Pastor Reynold Lim, 28/12/2008

Illustration:

A mother was expecting. Michael the son was expecting a brother or a sister. He talked to the baby everyday and built a relationship with the baby. There was complication and the newborn baby girl was placed in the ICU. A new room was prepared for the arrival of the new baby. However, the doctor asked them to prepare for the worst. Michael wanted to see his sister but young children were not allowed in ICU. The mother brought him there despite the protests from the nurse. Michael sang to the baby. Michael sang with the simple heart of a 3-year old. He sang You are my Sunshine. The parents encouraged him. Tears came over the parents and the nurses. The doctors called it the miracle of a loving brother. The parents called it the miracle of God.

The morale of the story is to never give up.

Where Do I Start?

… by responding with the Right Attitude

When we get up every day, we can choose to be in good mood or in bad mood. It is our choice. Life is about making choices.

There are three attitudes we need to build an authentic family: (1 Thess 2:17-20)

1Th 2:17-20 But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, (18) because we wanted to come to you--I, Paul, again and again--but Satan hindered us. (19) For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? (20) For you are our glory and joy.

  • An Eager Expectation in spite of Separation (1 Thess 2:17 cf Act 17:5-10)

Paul was forced to leave Thessalonica. NKJV uses "taken away", NIV "torn away" (literally "orphaned." Paul used very strong language to describe his emotions towards the Thessalonians. Paul was in distress when he left Thessalonica. He hope to be reunited with them soon.

  • A Steadfast Endurance amidst satanic opposition (1 Thess 2:18)

It could be a person influence by Satan, the thorn in the flesh, an illness. We don't know but Paul was hindered from coming to Thessalonica. Paul reminded us that it is appointed for Christians to suffer. 1 Thess 16 tells us that God has set a limit of sins that can be committed against us.

  • A Joyful Hope Undiminished by Problems (1 Thess 2:19-20)

Paul's rhetorical question pointed out the Thessalonians being in the presence of the Lord as his joy. He wanted them to reflect on his reply. He wanted them to think about the coming of Jesus via 3 terms:

    • Paul's Hope
    • Paul's Joy – he was rejoicing that their faithfulness to Christ proved his own ministry is successful.
    • Paul's Crown, a Greek term – a victorious athlete's wreath.

Paul explicitly used a present tense verb: "You currently are already these things to me." ( 1 Thess 2:20). The pronoun you is emphatic: "You, even you" or "you yourselves."

    Application

When we become so intense in fighting our battles that we become grim, we lose 3 things:

    • Hope – we come to believe that we will never make it through the struggle, we begin to feel we are already defeated
    • Lost hunger for God's Word – As our joy decreases, our desire to read, study and believe His truth diminishes
    • Sense of Humour – We begin to take ourselves too seriously and fail to take God seriously enough

How Do I Do It?

1Th 3:1-8 Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone, (2) and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, (3) that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. (4) For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know. (5) For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain. (6) But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we long to see you-- (7) for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. (8) For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord.

Timothy was a brother and a deacon (i.e. someone who serves God.)

… by making a Firm Commitment to

  1. Show Relational Concern (1 Thess 3:1-2, 5)

Paul ministered amongst the Thessalonians amid much conflict (v2)

A storm of suffering fell upon the Thessalonians whom he had established in the faith (1 Thess 2:14) when he was torn away (1 Thess 2:17)

Paul was genuinely concerned about their faith. Timothy was sent "to establish" ("to shore up, to buttress") and "to encourage" ("comfort", "standing alongside another person to put courage into them.")

  2. Embrace a Theological Perspective (1 Thess 3:4; Phil 1:29)

Paul didn't want the Thessalonians to be shaken, that is, agitated bu these undeserved trials and tribulations. Why? (Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake)

We are appointed for suffering and we are forewarned that suffering will come. Suffering is part of our Christian living. It is God's training. It includes hardship with intention to smoothen our rough edges.

  3. Make a Personal Response (1 Thess 3:6-8)

Three reactions if we have lost hope:

    1. Harbour resentment
    2. Insolate themselves from Christian friends
    3. Doubt and grow indifference towards God's Word

    Paul mentioned the following:

    1. They refused to blame a former authority for their suffering (v6)
    2. They desired to maintain close ties with Paul and his associates in ministry
    3. They maintained a firm commitment to a spiritual truth (v7-8)

What Do I Begin To Do

1Th 3:9-13 For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, (10) as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith? (11) Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, (12) and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, (13) so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

… by re-discovering the true meaning of living:

  1. Joyful in Gratitude (v8 cf 1 Thess 2:17-18; 3:7)

Paul has a sense of deep appreciate for what the Thessalonians had done for him. When we praise God, worship God and give thanks to God, it builds our spiritual life. Thanksgiving is a direct command from the Bible.

  2. Earnest in Prayer (v10)
    1. "night and day praying" – Paul and his fellow workers were fervent and consistent in their petitions.
    2. Specific in their prayers:
      1. Given the opportunity to see the Thessalonians again

ii. Given the opportunity to complete what was lacking in the faith of the Thessalonian believers.

  3. Abounding in Love (v11-12)

The source of love : god who is love (1 Jn 4:8). Love is not a natural part of our lives. We need spiritual formation via devotion.

The recipients of love: "overflow forward one another and to all"

"for" – "getting down deep into something"

L – Listen – we respect and accept people enough to graciously hear what they have to say

O – Overlook - we are quick to pass over and forgive the minor and unpleasant flaws

V – Value – do not discredit them with words

E – Express – Love is demonstrated by doing what is in the best interest of others. WE don't just feel love or say loving things.

  4. Established in Holiness (v13)

The end result of joyful gratitude, earnest prayer, abounding love is a life characterized by holiness – not by our own will power or by our own standard.

The standard of our purity – "established in holiness before God …" (cf 1 Pet 1:15-16)

How long are we to strive in God's power for this standard of holiness?

Only when we are in heaven we are truly free from sin. Only then we need not strive anymore.

America's Worst Restaurants For Kids Revealed
Mon Aug 4, 2008 11:52am EDT

Eat This, Not That! Authors Grade 43 National Chains; 6 Receive an "F"

NEW YORK, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Which kids' menus are most likely to make
your children fat? A year-long study of children's meals has revealed vast
dietary differences among America's favorite fast-food and sit-down chain
restaurants, according to the authors of the new book EAT THIS, NOT THAT! For
Kids. Co-authors David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding calculated calories, fat
(trans- and saturated), and sodium, as well as the average number of calories
per children's entree, and discovered that many of America's most popular
chain restaurants are nutritional nightmares for America's children.

The authors compared children's entrees; credited restaurants for having
healthy adult options that would appeal to the young palate; evaluated healthy
vegetable and fruit sides and drink options that go beyond sugar-laden soda;
and docked points for restaurants still dishing out unhealthy trans fats or
for refusing to release any nutrition information to their customers.

The result is a Restaurant Report Card that holds each food chain accountable
for the fare they're serving up -- to moms, dads, kids, teens, and everybody
else -- along with a survival strategy for making it through any meal
unscathed.

Did your favorite restaurant make the grade? (For complete descriptions --
plus the best and worst meals at each -- please go to eatthis.com/restaurants)

A
Chick-fil-A
Chick-fil-A excels in every category we tested for. With a slew of low-calorie
sandwiches, the country's "healthiest" chicken nugget, a variety of solid
sides like fresh fruit and soup that can be substituted into any meal, and
nutritional brochures readily available for perusing at each location,
Chick-fil-A earns the award for America's Healthiest Chain Restaurant (for
kids, for the adults who drive them there, plus anybody else wise enough to
make it their fast food choice).

Your Survival Strategy: Even the smartest kid in the class can still fail a
test, so be on your toes at all times, even at Chik-fil-A. Limit salads with
ranch or Caesar dressings, any sandwich with bacon, and make milkshakes a
special treat, not an everyday beverage.

A-
Subway(Also: Wendy's)
A menu based on lean protein and vegetables is always going to score well in
our book. With more than half a dozen sandwiches under 300 calories, plus a
slew of soups and healthy sides to boot, Subway can satisfy even the pickiest
eater without breaking the caloric bank.

But, despite what Jared may want you to believe, Subway is not nutritionally
infallible: Those rosy calorie counts posted on the menu boards include
neither cheese nor mayo (add 160 calories per 6-inch sub) and some of the
toasted subs, like the Meatball Marinara, contain hefty doses of calories,
saturated fat, and sodium.

Your Survival Strategy: Cornell researchers have discovered a "health halo" at
Subway, which refers to the tendency to reward yourself or your kid with
chips, cookies, and large soft drinks because the entree is healthy. Avoid the
halo, and all will be well.

B+
Boston Market (Also: Fazioli's, Jamba Juice)
With more than a dozen healthy vegetable sides and lean meats like turkey and
roast sirloin on the menu, the low-cal, high-nutrient possibilities at Boston
Market are endless. But with nearly a dozen calorie-packed sides and fatty
meats like dark meat chicken and meat loaf (which contains an unfathomable 55
ingredients!), it's almost as easy to construct a lousy meal.

Your Survival Strategy: There are three simple steps to nutritional salvation:
1) Start with turkey, sirloin, or rotisserie chicken. 2) Add two noncreamy,
nonstarchy vegetable sides. 3) Ignore all special items, such as pot pie and
nearly all of the sandwiches.

B
McDonald's (Also: Arby's, KFC, Panera Bread)
Though not blessed with an abundance of healthy options, Mickey D's isn't
burdened with any major calorie bombs, either. Kid standards like McNuggets
and cheeseburgers are both in the acceptable 300-calorie range.

Your Survival Strategy: Apple Dippers and 2% milk with a small entree makes
for a pretty decent meal-on-the-go. McDonald's quintessential Happy Meal(R)
makes this possible -- just beware the usual French fries and soda pitfalls.
Adults should go for a Quarter Pounder without cheese.

B-
Bob Evans, Denny's

C+
Domino's (Also: Ben & Jerry's, Quizno's)
Domino's suffers the same pitfalls of any other pizza purveyor: too much
cheese, bread, and greasy toppings. If you don't order carefully, your child's
pizza might come laden with more than 350 calories per slice. To its credit,
Domino's does keep the trans fat out of the pizza, and it also offers the
lowest-calorie thin crust option out there.

Your Survival Strategy: Stick with the Crunchy Thin Crust pizzas sans sausage
and pepperoni. If your must order meat, ask for ham. And whenever possible,
try to sneak on a vegetable or two per pie.

C
Burger King (Also: Au Bon Pain, Cold Stone Creamery, Papa John's, Taco Bell)
BK has only four legitimate kids' entrees on the menu, and none of them --
French Toast Sticks, hamburger, mac and cheese, chicken tenders -- are
particularly healthy. And while the recent addition of Apple Fries provides a
much-needed healthy side alternative for kids, the menu is still sullied with
trans fats. BK pledged to follow in the wake of nearly every other chain
restaurant and remove trans fats from the menu by the end of 2008, but so far,
we've seen little action. In fact, a large order of Hash Browns has an
outrageous 13 grams of the heart-threatening fat, and even an order of
Cini-minis will add 4.5 grams of trans fats to your kid's breakfast.

Your Survival Strategy: Adults can sign on for the Whopper Junior and a Garden
Salad, and escape with only 365 calories. The best kids' meal? A 4-piece
Chicken Tenders(R), applesauce or Apple Fries, and water or milk. Beyond that,
there is little hope of escaping unscathed.

C-
Chili's, Chuck E. Cheese's, Dunkin' Donuts, Jack in the Box, Ruby Tuesday,
Starbucks, Uno Chicago Grill

D+
Baskin Robbins, Dairy Queen, P.F. Chang's

D
Chipotle(Also: Baja Fresh, Krispy Kreme, Pizza Hut, Romano's Macaroni Grill)
We applaud Chipotle's commitment to high-quality produce and fresh meats, but
even the most pristine ingredients can't limit the damage wrought by the
massive portion sizes the chain serves up. The lack of options for kids means
young eaters are forced to tussle with one of Chipotle's behemoth burritos or
taco platters, which can easily top 1,000 calories. Don't think you'll escape
by ordering up a salad, either -- even a leafy bowl at Chipotle can knock out
more than half a day's worth of calories.

Your Survival Strategy: Stick to the crispy tacos or burrito bowls, or saw a
burrito in thirds.

D-
Cosi, On the Border

F
Applebee's, IHOP, Olive Garden, Outback, Red Lobster, T.G.I. Friday's
These titans of the restaurant industry are among the last national chains
that don't provide nutritional information on their dishes. Even after years
of communication with their representatives, we still hear the same old
excuses: it's too pricey, it's too time-consuming, it's impossible to do
accurately because their food is so fresh. Our response is simple: If every
other chain restaurant in the country can do it, then why can't they? Recent
New York legislation requiring these restaurants to run calorie counts on
their menus gave diners a glimpse of what these establishments are hiding: At
Friday's, no fewer than nine sandwiches and ten appetizers topple the
1000-calorie barrier; at IHOP, the "healthiest" entree-size salad has a
staggering 1050 calories; and at Outback, even a simple order of salmon will
wipe out 75% of your day's caloric allotment.

Your Survival Strategy: Write letters, make phone calls, beg, scream, and
plead for these restaurants to provide nutritional information on all of their
products. Ask them why they refuse to tell us the truth!

For a comprehensive A-to-F breakdown on all 43 other chain restaurants -- plus
the best and worst meals at each -- see the complete Eat This, Not That! For
Kids Restaurant Report Card at eatthis.com/restaurants.

Eat This, Not That! For Kids is available nationwide on August 19th.

A Beautiful Christmas (not the sermon)

Christmas Eve 1230
We had a Christmas lunch in the office. I had fun with my colleagues. The recent training with some of them helped to build bridges. I am always happy with be with my own division. In the gift exchange, I got a 300ml bottle of Molten Brown Invigorating Suma Ginseng Bath and Shower. It's about RM90. Hmm ... I will let Jesse and Kathleen and Jesse try it.

I received gifts (individual and groups) from my colleagues. The cake is still in the fridge. I want K and Jesse to see the complete thing before we start eating it together. The other gifts are on the table. I want to open them together with K and Jesse when they come back. If you think you spot a recurring theme, you are right. I missed them. Now, if they can come back with a little bit less noise ...

Christmas Even 1845
I reached church. Yek called and needed me to switch on the PA system. I turned it on. The PC could not be switched on. I called Ps David to tell him. There could be more friction and I think I don't care anymore. We had a good practice. Jamie was mulling a chord at the 2nd last bar of Silent Night. I sought help from Khiam Su but I could not get him. I then asked Jun Hua and he gave me F#m and that did the trick. We had a good dinner. I texted K and told her how much a louse I thought I was for didn't think of inviting some of our friends. They were there. Pastor Reynold must have invited them. Bad bad Loong. Worship was good. I used my notebook to project the PowerPoint. Then I moved it back to the PA area to plug in the USB device to record the sermon. Ps Ong was passionate as usual. I then moved the notebook to the front to show PowerPoint during ministry time again. Ministry time took a bit of time. Pastor Ong prayed for many people. Whenever I see a person (from a couple) getting prayed for, I'd pull the spouse / fiancee forward so they could be prayed for together. Pastor Reynold said he'd help to lock up. I got a ride from Suzie.

Christmas Day 0630
Way Mun was to pick me up at 0715. Even thought I slept late last night, I got up early. But I simply didn't want to leave the bed. I laid there, snoozing the alarm again and again until 0650. I cleaned up and changed. Way Mun called and said he'd be late. While I waited outside, the sister who cleans our house passed by on the way to do her morning walk in the field. We chatted a bit. Then Way Mun came.

Christmas Day 0750
We reached the River of Christ church before the service started at 0800. After worship, Pastor Alexa talked about the significance of the incarnation. She challenged us to go out there not as a duty but as a response to God's love. Pastor Monica in her closing prayer also made similar challenge. Go get them was the message.

Christmas Day (around 0915?)
I got a ride from Jeremy. I was at Kompleks Muhibbah for the first time. It was a large area. Some of us were there as early as 0430 to clean up the place and set it up. Praise God for them. I checked out the games stalls.

Christmas Day (around 1015)
I went through the program with Judy, my co-host. We quickly decided some stage games. There were lots of presents to be given away. There was a HUGE crowd. Most of them have been coming back to the carnival year after year. The organizing churches are truly working very hard to connect to the residents. Visitors got free good, RM1 coupon to play games and to get lucky draws. It was something many of them look forward to each year.

We had presentations by each of the five churches. Burn (of Akademi Fantasia fame) also made an appearance. He was not shy to declare his faith.

Mr Yew (my former principal and current vendor) brought his family. I am glad I invited him. He and his family enjoyed themselves. His 2nd daughter won 2nd prize in the colouring contest for the 10 to 12 category.

The was a cottage sale. Clothes, toys are other things were going for RM1 per bag (take all you can!) At 1445, we announced that it was going to take all you can for FREE. Have you ever seen throng of people moving in one direction? Oh, many of them mistook the gift redemtion counter as the place for the cottage sale. I quickly pointed them to the correct place. After the main prizes were given out (the two grand prizes were Samsung mobile phones.)

I really admire the brothers and sisters who worked to hard. If they are not doing it out of love of God and the people, there is no way they are going to do it year after year. These people shine with the love of God.

Brother Andrew gave me a lift to my parent's place where I had a meal (the first of the day. I don't eat when I need to do things. I don't have to go to the toilet. So I was tired and hungry.) After the meal, Jason, the boyfriend of my sister Peng gave me a lift home. I was so tired. I turned on some Christmas music, took a shower and waited until I was not so full before I had salad for dinner.

Epilogue

With K and Jesse away, I was slightly uncomfortable of doing this MC thing. I was alone (at home) and I needed transport. But as I expected, I'd come home feeling glad I was part of it. I did feel glad. This always happened to me. I am becoming more predictable to myself.

Well, K and Jesse are to reach home either after lunch or in the evening tomorrow. 1 more day before I go back to reality. End of dream. :)

Lost?

Lost Season 4? Are you kidding?

Where's Burn Notice? What are you doing 8TV?

Wardrobe Malfunction

It was about 1230. I went to the washroom before I went out to get lunch. The zip stopped working. The slider came off from one side. I struggled for a while to get it back. But I didn't trust it anymore. Not with a training going on at 1400.

I went to pick up the my house keys. Then I went out to get a taxi. No luck. I walked further. Same. I went back to the office to try to call one. Jane who was on duty gave me a number to call. No answer. Her attempt on another taxi company was met with an engaged tone.

I called my Fatt, my brother. No answer. I tried once more to think if there is a place nearby to get a new pair of pants. Nope. Didn't think so. Fatt called back. I told him my predicament. He said he had a meeting in Cheras at 1430 but he had time.

So, he sent me home to change. When I got back to the office, lunch time was almost over. I decided not to eat and just prepared for the training.

The training was wonderful. Truly interactive and productive. It was fun too. I am most glad that my colleagues were serious in learning up the system.

I am now in front of the idiot box (the one who watches it is not necessarily an idiot, mind you.) It's Monday night! It's TV-marathon with America's Got Talent, Burn Notice and Criminal Minds. Normally I would fall asleep halfway through Criminal Minds. I remember when we got 3 CSIs back to back on Monday nights. Those were the days!

p.s. The LG Cookie could prove to be an even bigger temptation to be than McDonald's. Each TV commercial I see gets my heart pumping faster. Phew. It's tough resisting the temptation to get one. iPhone is one thing with the price. LG Cookie? Hmm ...

Google Calendar - How can you not love Google?

I added the PT meeting dates for the next semester to the Yahoo! Group Calendar. I wanted it in my Google Calendar (which is sync to my Outlook and in turn my iPAQ.) There is no direct way to do it. Yahoo! Group doesn't allow Google Calendar to read it. So, I did it the manual way. I exported it into CSV and then imported it from Google Calendar. One short sync and I have it in my Outlook. The next time I sync my iPAQ, I will get it there too.

Then I noticed something I didn't know before. I set an SMS notification of 7 days before the monthly meetings. When I checked an existing meeting again, I noticed the notification has been changed to 1 week. Hey, neat.

Then I found out I could click on Quick Add and type "Dinner with family next Wed 7:00 p.m." and an entry was added with the Subject "Dinner with family" on 31/12/2008 at 7:00 p.m. Talk about reading my mind. It even offer an option for me to "undo" in case that's not what I wanted.

Google just makes it so easy. And once again, remember, their motto is to "do no evil."

Now can you dig that?

A Beautiful Christmas

Beautiful Christmas
Deacon Joshua Chan, 21/12/2008

In this Christmas season, we see decorations and hear carols in the shopping malls. To many people, beautiful lightings, nice decorations, buying and giving gifts, parties and turkeys are Christmas.

What does a beautiful Christmas mean to us? Some of us have known the Lord Jesus for some time and we know Christmas is about the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. We may have watched plays and dramas on this. Many of these plays were based on Luke.

We will read from Luke 1 to see Mary’s response to the call of God.

There was a 400-year period between the prophet Malachi and the birth of Jesus when God seems to be silent. The Jews were waiting for the promised Messiah. They were a chosen people proud of their identity. They see themselves as a class above others. If a child did not learn well, it’s not the fault of the child but the fault of the teacher. Not only God has chosen them but God also has established a covenant with them. In Gen 12, God promised to make Abraham a great nation and that all that blesses him will be blessed.

In 2 Sam 7:16, God promised David that his throne would be established forever. But David’s kingdom lasted only about 300+ years. The Babylonians conquered them and the Jews were taken into exile. This certainly cast doubts in the hearts of the Jews. The nation of Judah no longer existed. Yet, God has not given up hope on his people.

Isa 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Jer 23:5-8 "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. (6) In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The LORD is our righteousness.' (7) "Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they shall no longer say, 'As the LORD lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,' (8) but 'As the LORD lives who brought up and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them.' Then they shall dwell in their own land."

The prophecies mentioned in Isaiah and Jeremiah did not happen very soon. In the times of Malachi, the people were impatient and some stopped to listen to God. It’s as if God is giving the silent treatment to the Jews. The antidote to a silent treatment is repentance. During those years, the Jews were under tremendous pressures. There were many enemies. Even the freedom to worship God was oppressed. The Jews were not allowed to observe the Sabbath. No one was allowed to read the Torah in public. Circumcisions and other Jewish customs were banned. Violation of the law is punishable by death. Generations passed without any sign of the fulfillment of God’s prophecy of the Messiah.

After 400 years, God broke the silence. He sent forth His messenger to make an announcement.
Hear the Message of Christmas
Luk 1:26-33 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, (27) to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. (28) And he came to her and said, "Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" (29) But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. (30) And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. (31) And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. (32) He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, (33) and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."

This message carried so much hope for Mary. It showed that God is still a God of hope when everything seems bleak. God is always working. He chooses the right timing to fulfill His promises. If we are in a difficult situation, do not give up hope. Let this message given by the angel remind us that there is hope. The world cannot give us security. But Christians have hope and we can share this hope with the world. We should take the opportunity to share the good news.
Ask about the Message of Christmas
Luk 1:34-38 And Mary said to the angel, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?" (35) And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy--the Son of God. (36) And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. (37) For nothing will be impossible with God." (38) And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

Mary asked the angel how it could that she would bear a child as she was a virgin. The Apostle’s Creed emphasized the virgin birth of Jesus. Jesus Christ was born of the work of the Holy Spirit and not by human conception. Why was a virgin birth necessary? There were many opinions including sexual purity and having no part of a human father. If Jesus was born via ordinary human conception then he would have inherited Adam’s sin. If Jesus had inherited Adam’s sinful nature then he would be corruptible and hence could not save himself and others. For a redeemer to save the sinners, he must be sinless. There are no other religious leaders in the world who are sinless. Only Jesus is qualified to save us.

Besides being born of a virgin, Jesus also performed many miracles, including turning water into wine, feeding 5,000 with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. He calmed the storm and walked on water. He proclaimed and empty nests were filled. He healed many. The lame walked. The blind saw. The dead rose again.

Joh 3:5-6 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Salvation for mankind can only be obtained from a spiritual birth. No one could earn his / her salvation on his / her own. We must come to Jesus who is our only hope. The divine birth was so unique and significant in the history of mankind that even the angels rejoiced. Unfortunately, many did not take seriously this account of supernatural birth.

As Pastor Intern Melissa prayed, God withheld nothing. He gave His only begotten Son to us.

Let us return to God with a purpose. Do not forsake the first love. Do not wait until God gave us a silent treatment.

Mal 4:5-6 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. (6) And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction."

God warned Israel. He then did not speak to them for 400 years.
Announce and Celebrate the Message of Christmas
Mary hurried to the town to announce the Christmas message to Elizabeth with a song.
Luk 1:46-49 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, (47) and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, (48) for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; (49) for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
Luk 1:54-56 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, (55) as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever." (56) And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

When God spoke, there was once again hope and assurance. When God spoke, He fulfilled the prophecy of the everlasting kingdom of David. When God spoke, he brought good news and joy to the world. To Mary, it was the greatest news ever. The Might One has finally remembered His people.

As Christians, are we as excited as Mary? As we celebrate Christmas and the true meaning of Christmas, are we celebrating the truth as well? Do not let Christmas be just another festival. Allow the Christmas message to stir our hearts to once again be passionate to proclaim the good news to the world.

"You have not paid your credit card bills"

I have lots of bills and debts. We are working to fix this. We are on the way to recovery (for the umpteenth time.)

I was busy as usual this morning and once I finished a conference call with people from US (NJ and CA) and Penang, I received a call which almost made my day.

A lady with accurate Chinese pronunciation called me and told me I am overdue in my AmBank credit card. I was wondering, what AmBank credit card? I never had any AmBank Credit Card. She then gave me a credit card number that didn't register in my mind. She told me the card was applied on 16/08/2008 with an address in Damansara. A transaction was made for the purchase of a notebook in IOI Mall on 25/09/2008. The amount was RM4,864.

I wasn't upset. I was calm and was sure it was a mistake. I was a bit annoyed though. My mind went the speed of thought (that's faster than the speed of light) to trace who could have done that. Nope. I have not given my information to anyone I could not trust. I asked her why she spoke in Chinese. She said it's near Chinese New Year and so the bank wanted to talk to Chinese in Chinese. Hmm ... alarm #1 sounded.

Next, she tried to repeat what she had already told me (perhaps hoping for the desired panic effect in me.) I stopped her. I told her to just go to make a police report. She suggested I do the same and promptly gave me a number to call. 03-7966-1004. I asked for HER contact number. She said her number is 03-7952-0903. Her name is Ah May and her extension is #218.

I dialed the "lost card report centre" and a female Chinese voice greeted me. Chinese again? (Alarm sounded louder.) I asked her where that is. It sounded like a busy office. I told her I received a call about a credit card I didn't have. She said she wanted my full name. (Hey, she wanted my details.) I told her I'd call back and hung up.

The Bible said counsel of good friends are helpful. So, I immediately look for one of my closest friends - Google. (Do No Evil is their motto, now can you dig that?) I did a search on the phone number of the "lost card centre" (notice I put them inside quotes.)

I was not surprised to see news linked to the phone number amidst some product with that SKU. Apparently, this is a scheme. The credit card was the bait. When you call up wanting to clear your name, you give all the informtion to those helpful people in the "lost card centre." Then, they will tell you there was an information leak and hence the fraud. They will advise the victims to transfer their money to the account of a police inspector for safekeeping. I cannot imagine why anyone would do that but apparently some did and they never got the money back.

Police reports were made but these people are still active. Too bad they chose to mess with a friend of Google.

When you are called and told about a credit card you don't have, the best thing to do is to check with the bank itself. They will tell you if there indeed such a card. Not the "lost card centre." Next, consider lodging a police report.

The road ends here for the schemers as far as this friend of Google is concerned.

A news article can be seen here. It's a China news website. It's was taken from Sin Chew Daily dated 12/12/2008. I just wonder how they got my contact number.

When Others Help You

Pastor Richard Toh, 14/12/2008

Background (1 Thess 2:1-16, Acts 17)

Thessalonians is one of the earliest books written in the NT along with Galatians. Paul passed through Thessalonica in his 2nd missionary journey. Paul didn't start his letters to the Thessalonians (and Colossians and Philemon) referring to himself as the apostle. This is probably because he didn't need to exert his authority. He spoke to them in excitement because they were growing.

Whenever Paul planted churches, there were oppositions from the Jews. Opponents were demeaning the messenger and the message. They suggested Paul was a troublemaker who came with ulterior motives. Paul reminded them of his motives and behavior in teaching and nurturing them. We can pattern like Paul to be teachers and help others learn the Scriptures. The bottom line of the Thessalonians to walk worthy of God's calling. Majority of the congregation listening to the sermon are Christians but are they living in a way worthy of God's calling. When people see us can people see the difference?

Paul noted the work of faith, the labour of love and the endurance in hope in the Thessalonica church. There are always people in the church who discourage us and make comments. The last line of our church vision is to fulfill the Great Commission. We need to share the Gospel and disciple people. We are responsible.

When teaching others (1Thess 2:1-16)

  1. Teaching Boldly (vv 1-4)
  2. Teach Out of Love (vv 5-8)
  3. Live What You Teach (vv 9 -12)
  4. Teach for Results (vv 13-16)

Teach boldly

1Th 2:1-4 For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain. (2) But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict. (3) For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive, (4) but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.

  1. Teachers known and Paul reminder them what they already know. (v1) We learn as a family.
  2. We taught boldly from experience of persecution to suffering, agonizing Thessalonians. (v2) We cannot just share out of head knowledge. Our testimonies are our experiences. A preacher gets more convicted as he preaches more. In Project Timothy, the tutors learn more because they need to research more and they need to internalize what they learn. The more we share the more we are drawn to Christ.
  3. Teachers spoke from truth and honesty to please God and authenticated by God (vv 3 – 4). There are counterfeits but Paul said he was approved by God. He was speaking against the false accusations of his attempts to hoodwink the Thessalonians.

Teach Out of Love

1Th 2:5-8 For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed--God is witness. (6) Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. (7) But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. (8) So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

  1. God's approval is everything, not as men having authority or use devious means (vv 5 – 6)
  2. Out methods were gentle, caring, nurturing like a nursing mother (v7) A father normally runs around to make money and hence has less contact with the children. Children normally run to the mother. Mothers give their lives for their children.
  3. We did not exploit you instead demonstrate love and self-giving. (v8) Paul started the church and left soon after that. But Paul told the Thessalonians he gave them himself. He didn't just preach but desire to see transformation in their lives.

Live What You Teach

1Th 2:9-12 For you remember, brothers, our labour and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. (10) You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. (11) For you know how, like a father with his children, (12) we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

  1. We toil and labour to finance ourselves and not a burden to you. (v9) Paul was beaten up. He worked hard to sustain himself. Silas and Timothy were with him. The Jews accused Paul of preaching and demanding offerings from the Thessalonica church. Paul worked hard (night and day) and still preached to the Thessalonians. Paul financed his own way. Non-believers or new believers may have the wrong idea of tithing.
  2. You know our exemplary life – devout, righteous and blameless. (v10)
    1. Paul was devoted to God. There was a preacher who sinned. A good friend confronted him how he could preach and sin at the same time. The preacher confessed that he gave up his devotion. He did his exegesis and hermeneutics but the message he delivered did not influence him. We need to be devoted disciples of Jesus Christ. Devoted denotes desire, fervency and passion. If becoming a Christian does not change the way we think, speak or act, something is wrong.
    2. We are to be righteous or just. We don't cheat.
    3. A blameless man is one whom no one can put a finger on him. There is no question mark in his life. No one can find any fault in him.
  3. We sound authoritative (charged) but actually benevolent like a father (encouraged) so that you can walk worthy of God (vv 11 – 12) Paul supported the Thessalonians in their sharing of the Gospel. He was behind them.

Paul lives how he preaches. We must walk our talk.

Teach for Results

1Th 2:13-16 And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. (14) For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews, (15) who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind (16) by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved--so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But God's wrath has come upon them at last!

  1. Honest respond to God is proof of God working effectively in you. (v13) Paul pointed out the Thessalonians' honest respond to God as evidence of God working in them. They were energized. Enthusiasm is not something we can buy.
  2. Became imitators of the churches of God in handling persecution. (v14 cf Acts 17). The Thessalonians endured persecution and stood firm. How do people know we are Christians? When we are afraid to be identified as Christians, we are under the subtle persecution of the world.
  3. Judgement awaits those who opposed the Gospel, meanwhile gentiles are being saved. (v16) We can use Psalms to express our feelings.

Questions

  1. What keeps you from teaching God's Word to others? What's keeping you from sharing? If we don't know enough, we must give ourselves avenue to learn.
  2. How would you handle opposition as you take a stand for Jesus? Ps Richard always smiles and laughs. The Bible teaches that blessed are those who are persecuted.
  3. Paul demonstrated his love for the Thessalonians by being a mother and a father to them. Which image of concerned is most meaningful to you?
  4. In there a difference in teaching people and teaching material?

Have you been inspired late?

... be inspired and encouraged by this crisp and clear message.

When You Started Out (1 Thess 1:1-10)

Elder Stephen Choi, 20081207

Good works for Christian

· Remember where we were? Someone comes into your life and God convicted you. Any changes?

· Started out as Christian – what happened? Did you share Jesus with others?

· Continue grow in the Lord. Enthusiasm/Excitement? Continue to show gratitude to God for His work in our life. Has your love grown or faded?

1. Be Grateful to God

1Th 1:1-10 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. (2) We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, (3) remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Three cardinals / virtues of a Christian are faith, hope and love. They are not an end in themselves.

What does faith produce? Paul said it produces work in the life of Christians. We are saved not by works but grace – by what Jesus did on the Cross. James said faith without work is dead. We can do work without faith perhaps due to humanitarian purposes. There are people who help others without knowing God. But faith cannot be without work. Work can be evangelistic, helping others or act of kindness.

Love if often linked with labour or the pain involved in the work. Love motivates Christians to work hard even when the work is difficult and tiring. The labour is prompted by love. This love itself is prompted by the love of God which is placed in our hearts (Rom 5:5). Because of the love of God in us, we are willing to walk the second mile. Love is long suffering and it involves a lot of self-sacrifices. If our labour in church is not prompted by love but by a desire to fulfill people’s expectations, one day we will burn out and wonder what we are doing. We need to check ourselves.

Endurance is inspired by hope which will see us through tough times. It is not the suffering or hardship that causes despair, it is when we lose hope that we fall into despair. When we study the book of Job, we find Job to be so enthusiastic in his worship of God and acknowledged that God gives and takes. In Job 30:10, we see Job in despair. When hope defers, the heart despairs. What is the basis of our hope? Is it our bank account? Our children who will take care of us? Our government? Our hope is based on Jesus Christ.

God deposited these three virtues in every Christian. Do we recognize them in our lives? Are they working in our lives? Recognize God’s work and value them. Paul wrote letters to express his appreciations to those who labour hard for God. Sometimes it can be discouraging. Shepherds and church workers should be thankful that God is working in our lives. People’s appreciation is a bonus.

2. Respond to the Spirit

1Th 1:4-6 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, (5) because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. (6) And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit,

God was talking about how when he preached it was with the power of the Holy Spirit. It may sound like boasting but it changed the lives of the Thessalonians. The Word of God has power to change lives. The Holy Spirit is behind of this power and the changing of lives takes place because they were receptive to the message. Paul being convicted in his message also helped. He preached as though the audience believed in him

When Paul went to Thessalonica, he preached the Gospel and many were saved and great things happened. The church was established in a short time (Act 17). The accomplishments brought persecution by the Jewish leaders. They went to Jason’s house in hope to catch Paul. Paul wasn’t there and he was told to flee. Those who want to preach the Gospel must pay the price. There may not be immediate blessings (“in much affliction” in v6.) Despite the suffering and persecution, they were open to God. The Joy of the Lord flooded their souls.

Life is not always smooth sailing. When we face difficulties, we may be tempted to go into self-pity. If we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, we will receive the joy of the Lord. The world says when we have wealth and health, we will have happiness. Happiness in the world is not formed in suffering. But to the Christians, it is through pain that we find joy. It’s a paradox that the world cannot understand. We don’t invite pain. The pain and suffering refers to persecution due to our belief.

It is uncertain times now. Are we going to despair and fall into self-pity? If we are receptive to the Holy Spirit, it will see us through. We have received the Holy Spirit when we received the Lord, let’s continue to be receptive.

We sing the song “you give and take away” and “blessed be the name of the Lord” so easily. It came from the book of Job. Let’s hope we can overcome difficult situations with the joy of the Lord. “Blessed is the road marked with suffering.”

3. Influencing Others

1Th 1:7-10 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. (8) For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. (9) For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, (10) and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

The lifestyle was already evangelistic. Their lifestyle shows their belief in God. We must believe in the Gospel ourselves. We must believe the Gospel can change our lives. The Gospel must be powerful enough in our lives to change us first. Our lifestyle must align with our word. Many don’t become Christians with the excuse of the bad testimonies they see in Christians.

People can see the process of changed lives and this itself is a powerful testimony.

1. We turn from something, e.g. idols.

2. We turn the true, living God. We turn to serve the true and living God.

3. We expect God to come again.

The way we show gratitude to God is to live the way God wants us to live and to influence others to do the same. The process of conversion must be evident in our lives. Are we still living with idols in our lives? Are we serving the living God? Do we live like people who have hope?

When we have hope that God will come again, we can endure difficulties in our lives.

Conclusion:

When we started out as Christians, God entered our lives. Let’s continue to be receptive of Him and respond to the Holy Spirit. Let’s be a good and positive influence to others.

Porn on your PC?

Pastor Richard Toh spoke about how easy porn can get into one's PC even when one is not looking for it. He said we would read our mails and an embarrassing image could appear on our screen before we got a chance to delete it.

Consider the case of Ms. Amero, who suffered a miscarriage and the shame of having her teaching license revoked because a malware caused a PC to show unbecoming images to a class of students. And oh, she has to pay a USD 100 fine. She originally faced 40 years in jail.

The IT Manager claimed the virus protection was updated weekly even though the product was discontinued by the developer 6 months before. It is this kind of people that brings shame to the profession.

What if Starbucks Used Church Marketing?

The Marvel What If ... ? Series offers readers a chance to explore the road not traveled. It explores a pivotal moment in time in the Marvel universe (the real world, if you will) and then attempts to find out what would have happened if something happened differently. Some titles includes
  • What if Spiderman has joined the Fantastic Four?
  • What if the X-Men died on their first mission?
  • What if Venom has possessed the Punisher?
  • What if the gamma bomb has spawned a thousand Hulks?
Think Christian examined the church culture towards visitors in the context of Starbucks Coffee. Take a look at the video on the site. We may find it funny and laugh. But perhaps we can laugh no more when we realize what's happening in our church.

Should a Church Apologize?

Should a Church Apologize?

David Burchett

Author and Speaker

I was just about finished with my daily dose of depression from the morning newspaper when a full page ad stopped me cold. The headline in the Dallas Morning News screamed out the following message in big, bold letters.

We Were Wrong

"We followed trends when we should have followed Jesus. We told others how to live but did not listen ourselves. We live in the land of plenty, denying ourselves nothing, while ignoring our neighbors who actually have nothing. We sat on the sidelines doing nothing while AIDS ravaged Africa. We were wrong; we're sorry. Please forgive us."

That is a powerful and sobering admission. I was shocked. And I was greatly encouraged by the courage and the humility needed to admit such an embarrassing message to the public. Since I loved the ad I am sure Springcreek Church in Garland, Texas will get a lot of criticism. I don’t think like a lot of the herd.

I opened my first book When Bad Christians Happen To Good People with these words.

I must begin with some words of disclosure. I am a hypocrite. I can be arrogant and selfish. I have been known to stretch, conceal, or slightly massage the truth. I am sometimes inconsiderate and insecure. I struggle with lust and impure thoughts. My ego often rages out of control, and I battle foolish pride. I can be lazy and foolhardy with my time. I get angry, petty, and ill tempered. I am sarcastic and cynical.

I am a Christian.

Does that surprise you? It shouldn't. If there is one theme about our faith that should be communicated, it is that we all fall short of the goal spelled out in Christ's teachings. Author Max Lucado has a wonderful line. He says that God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way. So all of us believers are somewhere on that continuum of where we started and where God wants us to be. But that realization seems to penetrate our thinking only sporadically. In fact, there are those among us who will call me a counterfeit since I admit to such unflattering traits. They will write and tell me that if I had their brand of faith I would be above any of these sins all of the time. I believe they would be wrong.

Obviously a “bad Christian” like me was intrigued to hear how Springcreek Church explained their very public confession. Senior Pastor Keith Stewart wrote this in an open letter on the church website.

No one is perfect. No one lives sin-free. You blow it. I blow it. And the church does, too. I’m sure that you (like me) have, on more than one occasion, had to make something right by apologizing. So why is it so rare to hear a church apologize? The truth is, an apology from the church should not “stand out.” It should not make the community sit up and take notice. But it does, precisely because that the church rarely does what it tells others to do.

In all sincerity, we want to change that. The church in America has a serious credibility problem. Those outside the church look at us and often don’t see anything that even remotely resembles Jesus. Instead they see judgment, hypocrisy, and very little compassion. They hear our words, but don’t see a lifestyle that aligns with those words.

I know my tens of readers want to know how I feel about this apology. Is it Godly or is it a gimmick? Pastor Stewart began his open letter with this Scripture.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. (1 John 1, NIV)

I would love to go to a church that can confess with humility and grace that they have erred. I trust that Pastor Stewart’s heart is sincere and his congregation shares his authenticity. I rarely write in absolutes but one thing I have found is that truly Godly people always demonstrate humility. From reading the comments at the church website I am struck by the humility of Pastor Keith Stewart.

If I may gracefully add one caution to my fellow sojourners here in scenic Garland, Texas it would this lesson I learned the hard way. I am responding to a couple of lines that appeared in the open letter. I hasten to add that the leadership may be well ahead of your humble correspondent on this point so forgive me if I am presuming anything in your letter. Here are the sentences that caused me to recall my long journey to practice grace.

The only way the community will ever believe our words is if our behavior backs it up. With the help of God, we want to become a community of believers that lives out its creed.

May I suggest with all the grace I can muster after watching political coverage this morning the following thoughts. The community will believe your words if you create an environment of grace. A place where people can walk in flawed and hurting and be accepted for who they are and where they are. A place where they don’t have to wear a mask to be accepted. That is when, in my humble opinion, the community will believe your words. I am praying for you daredevils at Springcreek Church. Don’t let the spiritual hall monitors get you down with the drive-by judgments that will surely happen. If you are following the leading of the Holy Spirit you had no choice but to apologize. I pray that many of us will follow your example both personally and corporately.

Japanese Bank Failures

Following the huge financial problems rocking the very foundations of the U.S. economy and the run on Northern Rock and Bradford & Bingley in the UK, uncertainty has now hit Japan hard.

In the last 7 days Origami Bank has folded, Sumo Bank has gone belly up and Bonsai Bank announced plans to cut some of its branches.

Yesterday, it was announced that Karaoke Bank is up for sale and will likely go for a song, while today shares in Kamikaze Bank were suspended after they nose-dived.

While Samurai Bank is soldiering on following sharp cutbacks, Ninja Bank is reported to have taken a hit, but they remain in the black.

Furthermore, 500 staff at Karate Bank got the chop and analysts report that there is something fishy going on at Sushi Bank where it is feared that staff may get a raw deal…

I found it here.

200th Post - I am normal!

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

Doubt?

If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.
- Rene Descartes

I doubt I want to doubt at that level.

Wrong posting

I posted the previous blog entry in the PT Tutors blog. I spotted the mistake and removed it, posting it here instead.

However, damage has been done. The PT Tutors blog is connected to a Google Group and the post was sent to every member in the Group!

You have heard about not driving when you are not up to it. Let me tell you, don't blog unless you have a clear mind. And when you confused one colleague from another, it's tell tale sign you don't have a clear mind.

I don't know?

(I posted this into another blog by mistake. Good thing I realized the mistake and moved it back here.)

One very easy way to get under my skin is to tell me I don't know something I know.

I used to be a proud person. I think I have changed. But please try not to cross the line.

I am not boastful of my linguistic skills. But I do take pride (as in value, not see highly) in my work. So, don't come and criticize my translation and tell me others will laugh when you don't even seem to master even 1 language.

I have been working with PowerPoint for years in my pre-sale and sales career. Please don't tell me only so and so know how to fix a PowerPoint problem (with the obvious exclusion of my name in the list.) It's even funnier when those people named actually came to me for advice on the same issue.

I have been working on the various departments of my office. Don't tell me I don't know something because it's something to do with accounting. I don't have a degree in accounting. Do I have to go get a job as an accountant to prove I understand? (not that it's going to be easy to land an accounting job for me.)

In my heyday, I would have lashed out mercilessly.

Today, I am thinking. Does it matter?

My house was broken into

I received a call from Kathleen at 5:45 p.m. yesterday. She calmly told me someone broke into our house. Jesse's tuition money (about RM150 to RM200) was stolen.

After a few phone calls, we found out K's new HP Compaq (still under installment), an old Acer, an old Canon printer and more cash were taken away.

The padlock to the grille door was gone.

The caterer's son who sent the food noticed the house open around noon. (Although why he didn't tell us immediately remains a mystery. I would have called you if I see your house wide open.)

So, it must have happened in the morning.

A futsal court is being built in the field in front of my house. The workers are very hardworking. They work night and day. And my house can still get broken into.

I walked to the SEA Park police station to make a report. I was given the option to type the report myself. It was ok, I think I could type faster. Before I left, a Chinese couple came in to report a break in. They stay near Cheow Yang.

I was told to go to the Kelana Jaya police station since my place falls under the jurisdiction of the Kelana Jaya police station.

I went back to the office to wait for K. She dropped Jesse to his tuition class (that's near the Maybank Uptown branch, where my mom's boss was robbed in BROAD DAY LIGHT the moment he stepped out of the bank. The robbers took his car keys but didn't take his cars. We think they don't know how to drive.) We then went to the Kelana Jaya police station. It didn't take long. The Sargeant Major talked to me a bit and told me his officers would visit my house and asked me to go home first. Just when I reached the car where K was waiting, he called and asked me to lead his men to my house.

Three officers went to my house and took some pictures. Their CSI is very simple. They asked some questions, took some pictures and promised to ask around the next day. I was expecting them to dust for finger prints. The burglar went upstairs and switched on the light in my master room.

Either way, we are glad that none of us got hurt. What was lost are just possessions that can be replaced.

Collin and Mandy who were IMing with me found out first. I got immediate response from Ps Reynold, Ps Melissa, Grace, James and Jen via calls / SMS. I shared with my boss.

Brother Francis and Elder Stephen visited us separately. I understand you prayed for us during the corporate prayer. I also received calls / SMS / emails from Ps Alexa, Ps David, Dennis, Danny, Wen Jye. That shows you do care. And this is the way other can tell we are disciples of Christ.

Just tell me how I can care for you too.

We are considering the following measures:
  • Installing CCTVs
  • Installing alarm
  • Get a dog (we do have different opinions on what dog to get)
Or perhaps I should move to somewhere like James' house. 24 security. No fools would attempt to be funny there. :) For the benefit of those who don't know, James Teo stays near a family with heavy secutity. There are always a few guards outside the house. The going out and coming back are often escorted.

Either way, the only security we can have is from Him. And this came just after I preached about Phil 4:6-7 on Sunday. We do have the peace.

Once again, thank you for your prayers and love.

Ten Most Used Excuses

While browsing materials for the following Sunday, I bumped into this.

1. I forgot.

2. No one told me to go ahead.

3. I didn’t think it was that important.

4. Wait until the boss comes back and ask him.

5. I didn’t know you were in a hurry for it.

6. That’s the way we’ve always done it.

7. That’s not in my department.

8. How was I to know this was different'

9. I’m waiting for an O.K.

10. That’s his job—not mine.
