Evangelism – Malaysian Style (SIBKL)

Pastor Dr. Chew Wing Chee, 12/06/2010
“I used to do delivery now I do deliverance.”
SIB stands for Sidang Injil Borneo, i.e. the Borneo Evangelical Church. It originated from East Malaysia.
There are 88 churches in attendance today. Some are from smaller churches. But it’s not about numbers. We don’t focus on the numbers. Catch the spirit. Growth will come. Rick Warren was told by his father on his dead bed to “go and save one more.”

In 1928, 3 missionaries, Carey Tolley, Frank Davidson & Hudson Southwell came to Borneo from Australia. They arrived on the 12 Nov. Headhunters were still a mark of bravery of the young locals. They also had to battle rough terrains and malarias. Tolley prayed for Borneo so long that he developed calluses on his knees. Lumbawang people fed their children with tapai. a kind of rice wine and the population decrease because the children died young. Raja Brooke wrote a letter to the missionaries to to back since they were on a lost cause.
Saving souls is not a lost cause. That is the response of the missionaries. We need to let this sink into our system. It’s not about rhetorical.
Four books were written about the work including Drunk before Dawn, Uncharted Waters written by Hudson Southwell himself.
Five cultures of SIBKL
  • Excellence
  • Enthusiasm
  • Encouragement
  • Empowerment
  • Evangelism
A culture is an outward expression of our inner being. Everybody speak it, dream it and everything we do has an evangelism thrust.
Rom 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
The Gospel is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes.
1Co 9:22  To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.
That’s the passion of Paul and that should be our passion too.
Evangelism in SIBKL

1. From the pulpit

Make altar calls no matter how big or small the church is. Do it as least once a month.
You're writing a gospel a chapter a day
By the deeds that you do and the words that you say
Men read what is written whether faithless or true
So tell me what is the gospel according to you
~Richard Johnson
“Preach the gospel everyday, if necessary, use words.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi
Every heart with Jesus is a missionary. Every heart without Jesus is a mission field.
The SMILE 101 training - Scan, Move (towards the person), Interact, Linger,  Exit (do not overstay our welcome.)

2. In the Hospitality Room

The visitors took the trouble to come to the church. Take care of them. Put the best soul winners in the hospitality team. Many eternal deals are closed in the hospitality room. Give them a jacket and release them. They will bring people to Jesus.

3. In the cells

3 cell harvest. Easter, mid-autumn festival and Christmas. Each cell group is required to at least do once a year. Some do two. None do three.

4. Big days

Easter, Mothers’ Day, Christmas, healing services. Be creative, have a musical. Go for souls. Don’t just show them how good we can sing. Use the music to show the love of Jesus.
Focus on the health of the church, don’t worry about the numbers. Build a strong, dynamic church. When the people are fed and nurtured, they will go out and share the gospel. The Word of God is alive in them!
Evangelism has to be on-going.
It is criminal to give birth to a baby and leave it to fend for itself. We must have a program to nurture new believers.
